18.325411, -64.848525

Going sailing for a week. Definitely ready to be in some warm and dry weather. This week of monsoons was really dragging on me. Probably wont bother with the internet or cell down there so no posts for the next week. Hope the weather up here takes a good turn before I get back. I'll take sun or snow, anything as long as its not raining.

The Baths on Vigin Gorda, don't let the tranquil
picture fool you its always overrun with people

Dead Mans Bay on Peter Island, luckily its a high brow resort so
the beach is empty. Island regulations make it an open
anchorage so the beach is open to sailors.

Caves on Norman Island, I would say the coral and fish populations
drop by 20% every year. Scary stuff. Place was so colorful when I was 10 or
eleven, so much gray now its awful.

Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke. Definitley my favorite bar in the islands.
Perfect mix of party, tourist and true local hangout.
One of the only buffet's I'll ever order.

Seinfeld + Black Flag

I'm not one to for screen printed T'shirts and I usually stick regular old Hanes for my day to day wear, but this shirt is definitely awesome. Available in limited quantities from http://giveemtheboot.bigcartel.com/

The Best Place to Nap is Outside

Been totally swamped lately with midterms. Luckily these are hopefully the last midterms I'll ever have to take. Im on spring break next week, headed down to the Virgin Islands to get some sailing in. My dad and uncle recently picked up a 37 foot 87" Beneteau that is being kept near my Uncles on St Thomas. Its funny that all my life I've sailed boats that were as old or older than me. Beneteu gets a lot of flack for making crappy sailing boats designed for the charter crowd, but from what I've heard about this boat it should sail like a dream. From the photos and description it needs a heafty does of TLC to get it looking pretty but all the rigging and major systems are in perfect shape. Plans of bringing the boat up here in the summer are being discussed, but I would definitley like to get hot water installed in it before I make that trip. I'll try to borrow a camera for my trip so I can post up some of my own pictures for once.

Thinking about traveling by sail made me think of spending time on a classic ship, living below deck in a hammock. Luckily today most boats have much more adquete sleeping quarters. The hammock still makes an appearence in long distance racers who save weight with hammocks. Makes sense for sleepinng underway as the rocking of the boat wont bother you as much in a hammock. I will definitely be setting up a one on my porch for the summer. Cant think of a better place to spend warm afternoons. Hammocks are pretty easy to set up and convienent becuase if you hang them with hooks you can take the
m up and down as you please. Been thinking about picking up a camping hammock for some summer trips that I want to go on. Hopefully I'll get to do some long weekends and maybe even a full week or two in the woods.

Wine, Poetry, or Virtue

Get Drunk

One should always be drunk. That's all that matters;
that's our one imperative need. So as not to feel Time's
horrible burden, one which breaks your shoulders and bows
you down, you must get drunk without cease.

But with what?
With wine, poetry, or virtue
as you choose.
But get drunk.

And if, at some time, on steps of a palace, '
in the green grass of a ditch,
in the bleak solitude of your room,
you are waking and the drunkenness has already abated,
ask the wind, the wave, the stars, the clock,
all that which flees,
all that which groans,
all that which rolls,
all that which sings,
all that which speaks,
ask them, what time it is;
and the wind, the wave, the stars, the birds, and the clock,
they will all reply:
"It is time to get drunk!

So that you may not be the martyred slaves of Time,
get drunk, get drunk,
and never pause for rest!
With wine, poetry, or virtue,
as you choose!"

Seasonal Bitters from Brooklyn

Louis Smeby a 28 year old Brooklynite originally from Minnesota has began producing seasonal bitters as the A.B Smeby Bitter Company. His official website isn't up yet but his blog can be found at http://absmebybitteringco.blogspot.com/. He creates each batch of bitters with seasonal flavors in mind. This seasonal concept will mean that only certain batches of bitters will be available at different times of the year. Herbs and spices such as cinnamon, licourice, vanila, cherry, and mollasses all make appearances in his different recepies of bitters.

Jeremy Geddes

Jeremy Geddes is an artist and print maker from Melbourne Australia. He has been releasing some of the most hyperrealistic paintings and prints I have ever seen. He is known for presenting a juxtaposition of emotional extremes in his work. An interesting interview with him can be found at Austrailian Edge. His most recent series features floating cosmonauts in cityscapes. His cosmonaut will be released as a figure though 3A toys.

Fiat 500

The electric version of the new Fiat 500 is set to premiere in the next couple days. It really cool to see a company updating an already cool reinvention of a classic. While some would argue the original Fiat 500 was released in 1936, the iconic box of a car that comes to most peoples minds when the 500 is mentioned was released in 1957. It would change what people thought a small card could be, and inspire the release of other other cars such as the mini cooper. The original was a mere 3 meters long and only had 13 horsepower but still proved to be a useful and practical vehicle. The car would undergo several updates though its lifetime, with production continuing all the way until 1975. Following in the steps of the Mini, the car would be reintroduced in 2007, and once again prove to be a practical and reliable car at an amazing price.

33rd America's Cup

After a long battle of jury decisions and some seriously useless sailing politics, the 33rd America's Cup kicks off tomorrow morning. live coverage can be found at http://www.americascup.com/en/index.ph and http://www.ESPN360.com

Honestly I feel the Volvo Ocean Race is a cooler sailing event, but these two boats are amazing and it should be a good race.

Engineers Guide To Cocktails

Found this from flowingdata. Pretty cool if you know anything about technical drawings. Really dig the use of the different stock styles of cross hatching. Picture is mighty big, might take a while to load. There a link to a pdf on the site.

Ace Combs

Sadly not made in America anymore, Ace combs have been an American staple since the 1920's. Born from the American Hard rubber company, the name ACE and the signature spade logo was coined in 1924. Operations shut down during WWII, but after the war Ace relocated and business boomed. Ace combs have been used by everyone from James Dean to Spaceballs.
